Bob Lane, vice president of sales at Moehl Millwork, an Ankeny-based wholesale distributor of millwork building materials, recently shared his secrets for success over his 40-year career in the woodworking industry.
“The secret to this business is getting to know the customers and developing relationships with them," he recently told Indianola Guide.
Moehl Millwork serves lumber dealers across Iowa and contractors in the Des Moines area, completing woodwork in Ankeny, Altoona, Mitchellville, Newton and Colfax. It also maintains operations in Olathe, Kansas, under the name Kansas City Millwork Co.
The company offers a slew of woodwork and millwork-focused services, handling windows, entrance doors, interior doors, wood moulding, stair parts, hardwood lumber, cabinets, countertops and door hardware.
“We’re always changing and feeling the need to get better at what we do by relying on customer feedback,” Lane said. “Different trends are always coming up and we pride ourselves on being willing and ready to adjust.”
One thing that has remained consistent is the company’s unspoken motto of “sell good quality products, provide quality workmanship and back up what we sell.”
Lane said the approach is the same no matter the size of the job or the products being sold and exchanged. That's why the company has built one of the industry's best reputations in the Midwest.
“That's who we are,” Lane said. “It’s been that way forever, and that isn’t about to change.”
The company has an extensive inventory of doors, moulding, stair parts, lumber and plywood in a variety of species, profiles and styles. Customers can also order window lines to exact specifications.
The company’s 8,000-square-foot showroom is stocked with the latest trends in a wide array of products, making it a “must-see” before starting any project.
The company offers millwork for commercial and residential projects that need new construction or simple remodeling.
“Our goal is to be able to service anyone who might have a need for what it is we do,” Lane said.
